Are they concerned about their career? What happened to their income? This would allow us to compare our sample to the wider US population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out that 11% of participants were laid off or fired in the last 6 months alone (Sep 2022 &#8211; Feb 2023).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"753\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-1-2-1024x753.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-1-2-1024x753.png 1024w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-1-2-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-1-2-768x565.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-1-2.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This compares to an estimated 4.7% of the overall workforce in the same period, indicating that our respondents (all of them college graduates) were more affected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a bigger scale, an estimated 15.4 million Americans were laid off in 2022 which is the lowest in the past 20 years. Take, for example, 2020 when the Covid pandemic led to an estimated 41.7 million layoffs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/YQ7zRgTiUNl1Cr3fExJvNPMXI9m9wdO6hVMClWzIzDbu_R-whbviSRJP0Raj4HtnY4hck0YZkFfJcpSopjFCFv9I99au3-_3o1Vam2qqd-lMGOQ2q0BgiPkE_I-9M4100_4h9NsebYoPaz404qRWjc0\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Research by Zippia<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, most layoffs took place in the second half of 2022, especially Q4, so the numbers in 2023 may look very different.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-49-are-concerned-about-being-laid-off\">49% are concerned about being laid off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how does the combination of factors we mentioned (tech layoffs, interest hikes, inflation) impact people&#8217;s expectations about losing their job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost half of our respondents said they are at least a little concerned about being laid off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"910\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-9-1024x910.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-9-1024x910.png 1024w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-9-300x267.png 300w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-9-768x682.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-9.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If 1 out of every 2 people is concerned about being laid off, this seems to indicate worry and low confidence in the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-72-believe-they-can-find-a-comparable-job-within-6-months\">72% believe they can find a comparable job within 6 months<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While people are concerned about losing their job, most of our respondents believe they can find a comparable job within 6 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"941\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-10-941x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-10-941x1024.png 941w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-10-276x300.png 276w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-10-768x836.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-10.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 941px) 100vw, 941px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another sign of uncertainty about where the economy is headed &#8211; we have reasons for concern but at the same time there are plenty of jobs available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let\u2019s see how income is affected after switching roles\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-22-took-a-reduced-salary-after-switching-roles\">22% took a reduced salary after switching roles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s interesting to note that almost a quarter of our respondents took a salary reduction in their most recent job switch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"799\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-11-1024x799.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-11-1024x799.png 1024w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-11-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-11-768x599.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-11.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering inflation and a general move upstream when it comes to salaries, it\u2019s a little concerning that so many people were willing to take a pay cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This indicates that a considerable part of respondents faced financial pressure in the short term so we also looked at the impact on their debt situation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-73-have-more-or-the-same-level-of-debt-compared-to-2022\">73% have more or the same level of debt compared to 2022<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the back of rising inflation and interest rates, many people (35.5%) actually took on more debt in 2022, while 37% had the same level of debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"911\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-13-1024x911.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-13-1024x911.png 1024w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-13-300x267.png 300w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-13-768x684.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-13.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this indicates confidence in the economy but does it reflect the reality of high costs of borrowing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-70-are-open-to-freelancing-in-between-jobs\">70% are open to freelancing in between jobs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing gig economy seems to provide an extra layer of optimism when it comes to filling the financial gap between jobs. Based on our results, freelancing is a viable alternative to supplement respondents\u2019 income.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"962\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-14-962x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-14-962x1024.png 962w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-14-282x300.png 282w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-14-768x817.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-14.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, only 7.7% of respondents said they are currently freelancing &#8211; that\u2019s well below the US average of 36%. This could mean that freelancing is more common for people without a college degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-66-are-open-to-changing-their-industry-if-laid-off\">66% are open to changing their industry if laid off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So we know 22% of respondents were willing to take a pay cut when switching jobs. But what about changing industries entirely? It turns out that two-thirds of our participants are open to switching industries if laid off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"958\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-15-958x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-15-958x1024.png 958w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-15-281x300.png 281w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-15-768x821.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-15.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 958px) 100vw, 958px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 13% are firm on staying within the same type of company which means respondents are fairly industry-agnostic. So people tend to see their skills as transferable and don&#8217;t see staying within the same industry as a major benefit to their career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-44-saw-a-negative-effect-on-their-personal-relationships\">44% saw a negative effect on their personal relationships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We included a more personal question to see how the economic situation impacts social relationships. 44% of our respondents said it had a negative effect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"748\" src=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-16-1024x748.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-16-1024x748.png 1024w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-16-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-16-768x561.png 768w, https:\/\/codeinterview.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chart-16.png 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This shows that economic conditions go hand in hand with personal relationships.
